*Backhoe Operator duties and responsibilities*
Backhoe operators use heavy equipment to dig, scoop and lift materials.
Operators may also use other types of heavy equipment such as dozers, dump trucks, skid steer, tractor trailer, and excavators, etc.
Backhoe operators need to have a basic understanding of construction and engineering to be able to operate machinery safely.
Must have communication skills to coordinate daily activities and be able to listen to instructions and ask questions when there is a jobsite issue.
Follow instructions from supervisors and read FPL prints to know where they’re going and what they’re doing for the days’ work.
Some of their typical day-to-day responsibilities include:
· Operate backhoe to excavate, move, and grade earth, rock, and other materials.
· Read and interpret blueprints, maps, and other drawings to determine the best way to complete a project.
· Inspecting work sites for damage to existing structures or equipment.
· Inspect the jobsite to ensure that it is safe and clean.
· Operating backhoes to dig ditches, trenches, or holes for new construction projects and installment of PVC conduit.
· Perform work safely and bring safety hazards to the attention of management.
· Understanding located and marked service to ensure that operations will not disturb buried services.
· Knowing where existing utilities may lie prior to beginning any excavating operations.
· Able to communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and management about on-site issues.
· Backfill excavations and grading after completing work.
*Requirements and Skills:*
· State valid driver’s license.
· Applicants must take and pass Drug Screening and Background Check.
· Certification in forklift operation (in-house training provided).
· Physically fit with the ability to lift objects weighing between 50-100 pounds.
· Required physical ability, endurance, and desire to perform potentially strenuous outdoor work under various weather conditions.
· Adhere to safety regulations and procedures.
· Positive work history and ability to maintain solid attendance.
· Maintaining accurate records of all activities performed including hours worked and materials used.
· Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
· Ability to speak and understand English.
