_ The purpose of this job within the organization is to perform a variety of routine and complex technical work inspecting residential and commercial buildings to enforce building codes and all city ordinances related to building permits.
This job works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
*Duties and Responsibilities* The functions listed below are those that represent most of the time spent working in this job/class.
Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job/class as necessary.
*Essential Functions:* Provides excellent customer service to the public and assists contractors with building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical coding issues for new or remodeled construction.
Performs on-site inspections of site, structural, framing, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems in compliance with building codes such as Florida Building Code, FPC, FMC, and National Electrical Code.
Plans daily reviews including residential and commercial with Building Official; corrects inspection violations and stops work orders that started without a permit or are unsafe.
Creates and maintains records and reports of building and inspection activity.
Works closely with Planning and Zoning to assist with site visits, setback issues, and landscape requirements; interprets flood zone maps.
Issues permits as appropriate; assists with application processing and fee assessment and collection for permit issuance.
*Additional Duties:* Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field of construction and applicable codes and ordinances for architects, engineers, contractors, developers, and residential homeowners.
Performs related work as assigned.

_ Reads technical instructions, procedures manuals and charts to solve practical problems, such as assembly instruction for tools, routine office equipment operating instructions, and methods and procedures for investigations and in drawing and layout work; composes routine reports and specialized reports, forms, and business letters, with proper format; speaks compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.
*Judgment Requirements:* _Judgment requirements refer to the frequency and complexity of judgments and decisions given the stability of the work environments, the nature and type of guidance, and the breadth of impact of the judgments and decisions.
_ Responsible for the actions of others, requiring almost constant decisions affecting co-workers, crime victims, patients, customers, clients, or others in the general public; works in a moderately fluid environment with guidelines and rules, but frequent variations from the routine.
*Complexity of Work:* _Complexity addresses the analysis, initiative, ingenuity, concentration, and creativity, required by the job and the presence of any unusual pressures present in the job.
_ Performs skilled work involving rules/systems with almost constant problem solving; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results and occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

*Physical Demands:* _Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
_ Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
*Equipment Usage:* _Equipment usage involves responsibility for materials, machines, tools, equipment, work aids, and products.
_ Handles or uses machines, tools, equipment, or work aids involving little or no latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.
*Unavoidable Hazards:* _Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
_ Involves routine and frequent exposure to electrical shocks, heights.
*Safety of Others:* _Safety of others refers to the level of responsibility for the safety of others, either inherent in the job or to ensure the safety of the public.

*Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:* Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one year of college in general construction or a closely related field.
Requires four years of experience in general construction, building maintenance and/or inspection, or closely related experience.
*Special Certifications and Licenses:* Valid Florida Driver’s License Inspector certifications in multiple trades required.
